Understanding 1098-T Requirements
Form 1098-T (Tuition Statement) reports tuition payments and related educational expenses for students. Educational institutions must provide this form to students and file with the IRS to help students and families claim education tax credits like the American Opportunity Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit.
Generally, you must issue 1098-T forms to students for whom you received qualified tuition and fee payments during the tax year. This includes undergraduate, graduate, and professional students enrolled in credit courses, with some exceptions for non-resident aliens and courses not creditable toward a degree.
Key information includes qualified tuition and fees billed or received, scholarships and grants processed, adjustments from prior years, and whether the student was enrolled at least half-time. The form also indicates if this is the student’s first four years of post-secondary education.
Forms must be provided to students by January 31st and filed with the IRS by February 28th (paper) or March 31st (electronic filing). We handle all deadline management to ensure your institution stays compliant.
