Our Story
1960-1980: From Loading Dock to Computer Pioneer
The Beginning: One Machine, One Vision
In 1960, Robert Lambert Sr. stood in a Chicago loading dock watching a massive IBM 407 tabulating machine being carefully maneuvered into place. This 2,000-pound mechanical marvel, with its spinning wheels and clicking relays, would become the foundation of Tab Service Company.
At the time, businesses were drowning in manual data processing. Before spreadsheets, before desktop computers, before calculators were commonplace, tabulating data meant hours of hand-calculated figures prone to human error. Lambert saw an opportunity: provide automated data tabulation services using this revolutionary technology, allowing businesses to process information accurately and efficiently for the first time.
Racing Alongside Computing History
The 1960s were a time of extraordinary technological transition, and Lambert ensured Tab evolved with every breakthrough. As IBM introduced new capabilities, Tab acquired them:
- IBM 1401 (early 1960s): The first transistorized computer that was truly programmable and could store instructions in memory, a quantum leap from mechanical tabulation
- IBM System/360 (mid-1960s): Revolutionary modular architecture that could scale with business needs
- IBM System/370 (1970s): More powerful successor that cemented Tab as a true computer service bureau
Tab became one of Chicago’s pioneering computer service bureaus, offering mainframe timeshare services when owning a computer meant dedicating an entire climate-controlled room and a six-figure investment. Small and medium businesses could access computing power previously available only to the largest corporations.
Our history is entwined with the history of computing itself, from punch cards and magnetic tape to integrated circuits and beyond.
1980-2005: Building Expertise Across Industries
As personal computers arrived in the 1980s and 1990s, many predicted the end of service bureaus. Instead, Tab recognized a new opportunity: businesses still needed partners who could handle specialized, high-volume, compliance-critical processes.

The TAB1099 and TAB1098-T Platforms Launch (2005)
In 2005, we launched our TAB1099 and TAB1098-T platforms (previously called TSC1099 and TSC1098-T), recognizing that tax form processing was becoming increasingly complex while penalties for errors were rising. This cloud-based solution transformed how organizations handle 1099, 1098-T, and W-2 compliance and provided automated validation, electronic distribution, IRS e-filing, and complete audit trails.
The platform exemplifies our approach: we don’t just adapt to industry changes, we create solutions that anticipate them.
Today: Third Generation, Same Commitment
As a family-owned business moving into its third generation of leadership, we continue our founder’s vision with expanded scope.
