Last week, staff over in Prince William County, Virginia reported a mistake that's going to cost the 2014 fiscal year a lot of money, about $5 million to be exact.
During the Board of County Supervisors meetings earlier this year, they considered cutting programs like the recreational bus for senior citizens to save $30,000 and drug rehabilitation programs for inmates that would save $600,000, according to Inside Nova.
These adjustments were made, but were applied accidentally to the 2012 fiscal year. This erroneous data entry is forcing county officials to make some difficult decisions soon to correct the unbalanced financial plan for the upcoming year.
An internal problem like this could have been solved if they collaborated with a data entry services business, but now supervisors must keep in touch with Virginia's County Executive and auditors.
"We either have to examine potential budget cuts, or we have to look for cost savings," Prince William County spokesman Jason Grant told the Potomac Local.
As of July 12, there has not been a solution for the because the supervisors will meet with one another on July 16. Prince William County may have to consider outsourcing their data processing services to prevent a situation like this from happening again.
