A quick overview of format options. . . .
The PDF format is available in three types – each with its advantages and disadvantages. As a part our service, we help you to determine which one is best for your application. Here are the basics.
PDF Formatted Text & Graphics – produced directly from scanned paper documents or digital word processing files. Once scanned or imported, the text will remain editable plus bitmaps are kept for graphical zones on the page.
This type of PDF is recommended when size is a factor for your application, such as web-based retrieval. The tradeoff with this option is cost since any OCR errors must be manually corrected.
PDF Searchable Image – this type of PDF format is produced using scanned pages. This format provides an image of the original document, preserving the look and feel, but you can also search on OCR results that exist underneath the displayed image. The text available for searching but cannot be edited.
This method presents the original document state to the viewer. It is useful in applications where file size and storage requirements are not an issue. This is a low cost option except when correction of OCR errors is required; then the price depends upon the level of accuracy desired.
PDF Image Only – this PDF is produced from scanned pages and OCR is not performed. The image replicates of the original document but you cannot search for words or phrases that appear. Information fields, such as subject and keyword, may be searched. If you do not require full text searches as part of your conversion project, this is the best option for converting your paper documents to PDF.
